What is STAR Island? – More Info
STAR stands for Sustainable Terrain And Resources. It is a private destination using off-grid technology to power the entire island, create pure clean water and produce food on-site. We offers desirable and unique experiences to visitors, while caring for the environment and educating the public about sustainable development.

How do I get involved? – More Info
STAR is a project started by a group of individuals who believed they can make a difference, and we know there are others out there who think the same way. One of our goals is to educate people about what works in sustainable development and to be a positive change in the lives of the community around us. Your support is essential to our success. If you want to be a part of this project, here are some ways you can get involved:
- Become a member of STAR Island.
- Visit the island.
- Share our project with others: Tell your friends about STAR and how it will change the way we do hospitality in the Bahamas! Find us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and invite your friends to join us.
- Keep updated on our progress: Find out about the progress we’ve been making, learn about the technology and methods we are using and other news by checking our Blog.

How is STAR Island sustainable? – More Info
Our goal is to demonstrate that we can develop a destination where sustainable practices don’t mean sacrificing comfort. We are completely off-grid, producing our own energy with solar and wind power systems, producing and recycling our own water and growing our own food in the Island’s Gardens. While the project is still in its infancy, our Beach Bar & Grill is already open and we are welcoming visitors for day trips, and soon we will have accommodations for guests. STAR will be an ever-evolving showcase of green technology and our experiences will be shared so others are inspired to create their own plans of sustainable development.
How does STAR protect the environment? – More Info
Protecting the environment sometimes is not as easy as simply leaving it alone. As an uninhabited island, STAR was a dumping ground for coastal debris that washed up on shore. In addition to that, the island was over run with invasive species of plants choking the vegetation and preventing native species from flourishing. The erosion of soil in the island’s terrain into the ocean also had a negative impact to the natural ecosystem.
By becoming stewards of this island, we have been able to enhance the local ecosystem, developing a healthy balance between inhabiting the land and taking care of it. Since starting the project, many invasive species were eradicated or taken to a manageable level. Through geoengineering, we changed the slope of the terrain so that rainwater would run into our water reservoir and not the ocean, increasing the amount of fresh water that is retained on the island. We reduced coastal erosion by planting native species, taking areas of exposed soil that would result in runoff and lining it with natural stone, creating miniature reef systems. Our dock uses natural rock from the island to create more habitat for marine creatures. Those are all environmentally responsible solutions that improve the ecosystem and help nature thrive.
Who is the design team and key partners involved? – More Info
The design team is led by founder and CEO David Sklar. Some of our partners include the United Nations NGO Sustainability, The Center for Responsible Travel, Tropic Ocean Airways, James Hardie and Franklin Electric. What are the next steps and when will the project be finished? – More Info
The STAR Island model is an ever-evolving one. Currently, less than 10% of the island is developed. We are excited to begin the construction on our hydroponic greenhouse and we are close to finishing our guest suites very soon. In the coming years, we will continually introduce new phases to our 35 acres. Our philosophy is that the process of delivering the best sustainable solutions in the most innovative ways is as important as the final product. Follow our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts and blog for updates on construction and other news.
